Citi Rolls Out Stablecoin Payment Service for Corporate Clients
Citi introduced a checkout service that lets institutional and commercial customers convert cash into dollar-pegged tokens and settle payments on bank-supported rails. Custody, reporting, and reconciliation remain within Citi’s existing infrastructure, and clients can still use traditional wires or SWIFT. The offering is limited to customers that pass onboarding and compliance checks.
Citi’s new checkout lets qualifying institutional and commercial customers move cash into dollar-linked tokens and pay through rails the bank supports. Custody, conversion, reporting and reconciliation stay inside Citi’s systems, and users may still choose wires or SWIFT. Onboarding, compliance and risk checks gate access.
The bank aims the tool at treasury work, cross-border supplier disbursements, intra-company funding and faster reconciliation of global cash pools. Citi says token transfers can settle almost instantly with fewer intermediaries. Observers flag open questions around regulation, reserves and interoperability as banks test tokenized money.
Citi’s service may mainly affect large corporate treasurers, their suppliers and cross-border payment staff, who could see faster settlement and clearer reconciliation. If adopted, quicker supplier disbursements might improve cash flow for downstream businesses and workers. Yet access is gated by onboarding and compliance, so smaller firms or unbanked individuals may not benefit directly. Wider use of private token rails could also raise questions about oversight, reserves and consumer protection if safeguards lag.
