Google expands Pixel HiLight notification feature with additional colors and messaging support

Google's Pixel HiLight notification light, currently limited to alerting users about favorite contacts and Gemini interactions, will receive significant enhancements including support for additional colors and message notifications. Code discovered in the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5 suggests the feature will expand from five available colors to nine, with messaging capabilities potentially added for apps like Google Messages. The update is expected to roll out later in the year, possibly through a Pixel Drop update in December.
Google's HiLight feature represents an ambitious attempt to repurpose smartphone hardware for ambient notifications. The notification light, integrated into the camera flash assembly on Pixel 11 Pro models, initially shipped with restricted capabilities—responding only to calls from starred contacts and Gemini interactions. This limited launch raised questions about whether the feature was prematurely released before its full potential could be realized.
The upcoming expansion signals Google's intention to fully develop HiLight's utility. By doubling the color palette from five to nine options, users could theoretically receive more granular notification categories. Adding messaging support would align the feature with how users actually communicate daily, potentially making it genuinely useful for quick ambient awareness without requiring screen activation.
These enhancements could meaningfully affect how smartphone users manage notifications while maintaining focus on their surroundings. The expanded color and messaging support may appeal to users seeking less intrusive alert systems, particularly during travel or outdoor activities where glancing at a camera flash could be less distracting than checking a phone screen. However, the feature's impact may remain limited to premium device owners, and its adoption depends on whether third-party messaging apps gain integration beyond Google's own services.
