Pentagon Units Partner to Accelerate Commercial Satellite Procurement for Geosynchronous Orbit Surveillance

The Defense Innovation Unit and Space Force have established a joint effort to rapidly develop and deploy next-generation commercial satellites for monitoring geosynchronous Earth orbit, with Northrop Grumman and True Anomaly selected to produce prototypes by 2028. This collaboration combines the DIU's GHOST-R project with the Space Force's RG-XX program to replace aging surveillance satellites while reducing costs and technical risk. The initiative, part of a broader $6.2 billion Andromeda program, is intended to provide faster capability deployment to military operations while supporting potential future orbital warfare capabilities.

The Pentagon is consolidating two satellite development initiatives to modernize its geosynchronous orbit monitoring capabilities. When the Space Force established its RG-XX program in April as part of the broader Andromeda effort, officials recognized synergies between the two efforts and moved to align them under unified leadership.
