UK Regulator Launches Crypto Authorization Process With February 2027 Deadline

The UK Financial Conduct Authority opened applications for cryptocurrency firms seeking authorization under a new regulatory framework taking effect October 25, 2027, with a February 28, 2027 application deadline. Existing money laundering registrations will not automatically transfer to the new authorization system, requiring firms to apply anew. The expanded regulatory framework covers stablecoin issuance, crypto trading platforms and market abuse protections.
The UK's new crypto regulatory system represents a significant expansion of the FCA's authority over digital asset businesses. Previously, the agency's oversight was limited to anti-money laundering compliance and restrictions on financial promotion. The updated framework broadens this to include direct supervision of stablecoin issuers, cryptocurrency trading venues, and mechanisms to prevent market manipulation and abuse.
Industry leaders have cautioned that the transition will present operational challenges, particularly for smaller firms. Companies currently holding money laundering registrations cannot simply migrate to the new authorization system; they must submit fresh applications and demonstrate compliance with substantially higher standards. This requirement means even established operators face uncertainty during the approval period.
The authorization deadline and implementation timeline could reshape the UK crypto sector's composition. Firms lacking sufficient resources or compliance infrastructure may exit the market rather than pursue new authorization, potentially reducing competition but also consumer exposure to unvetted operators. Conversely, established businesses meeting the stricter standards may gain competitive advantages. The framework could position the UK as a more attractive regulatory environment for compliant firms, though approval timelines and criteria will ultimately determine whether the transition encourages or discourages industry growth.
