Giants Cut Beckham After Struggling to Find Offensive Role for Comeback Bid

The New York Giants released wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. this week after the returning player garnered only 20 offensive snaps and one target through three games. Head coach John Harbaugh acknowledged the team's inability to effectively integrate Beckham into the offense, stating the decision ultimately fell on the coaching staff rather than the player's performance. The former first-round draft pick had taken 2025 off to recover mentally and physically before attempting his comeback with the team that originally selected him.

Beckham's brief stint with the Giants highlighted a fundamental mismatch between his availability and the team's offensive scheme. The wide receiver entered the season as a fourth-string option behind established targets Malik Nabers, Darnell Mooney, and Malachi Fields. With the Giants heavily favoring heavier personnel groupings that utilize multiple tight ends or running backs rather than three-receiver sets, there were simply insufficient opportunities to deploy Beckham meaningfully.

Head coach Harbaugh, who previously worked with Beckham during his 2023 season with the Baltimore Ravens, expressed genuine regret about the outcome. Rather than attributing the release to performance concerns, Harbaugh acknowledged the coaching staff's inability to construct a viable role for the returning player, taking responsibility for the decision despite his stated desire to make the arrangement succeed.
