NASA Contracts Company to Build 5G Network for Future Lunar Surface Operations

NASA awarded Modulate Space Corporation a $38 million contract to develop a 5G communications system with integrated Wi-Fi 6 capability for use on the lunar surface supporting future Moon Base operations. The project consists of two phases: development and lab demonstration of a Network-in-a-Box system through January 2028, followed by flight demonstration on the lunar surface through December 2028. The effort aims to create scalable, standards-based communications infrastructure that can evolve to meet future lunar exploration needs.
NASA's Glenn Research Center selected Modulate Space Corporation to engineer communications infrastructure tailored specifically for lunar operations. The project targets a firm-fixed-price arrangement valued at $38 million, divided into consecutive phases spanning roughly two years. Initial work focuses on building and validating a portable Network-in-a-Box prototype within laboratory conditions before transitioning to actual deployment testing on the Moon.
The initiative prioritizes flexible, standardized technology capable of supporting expanding lunar exploration missions. By combining 5G with Wi-Fi 6 capabilities, the system aims to provide redundancy and adaptability as future Moon Base operations grow in scope and complexity. Hardware, firmware, and software development will inform NASA's understanding of how communications systems perform in the lunar environment.
This contract may accelerate commercial space infrastructure development by establishing telecommunications standards for extraterrestrial environments. Success could influence how private companies and international partners design lunar operations, potentially reducing future development costs. The project affects aerospace contractors, telecommunications firms, and space agencies planning extended lunar presence, while broader implications touch the emerging space economy sector and long-term human exploration feasibility.
