Children's TV Producer Cottonwood Media Returns to Independence After Management Buyout

Cottonwood Media, known for producing children's series including Find Me in Paris, has regained full independence after 11 years under Federation Studios ownership through a buyout led by founder David Michel. Michel and co-leaders Cécile Laurenson and Zoé Carrera Allaix will oversee the operation, while Federation International continues distributing Cottonwood's extensive catalog and maintains first-look rights to future productions. The company has generated over 120 hours of content across 13 international series to date.
David Michel has successfully reacquired Cottonwood Media through a management buyout, returning the children's production company to independent status after more than a decade of ownership by Federation Studios. Michel, who established the company ten years ago following his tenure leading kids programming at Zodiak, now shares leadership responsibilities with Laurenson and Carrera Allaix as the trio steers the independent operation forward.
The transaction preserves Cottonwood's existing business relationship with Federation International, which will continue distributing the producer's library of animated and live-action series while maintaining negotiating priority on new projects. This arrangement allows Cottonwood to maintain continuity in its market presence while operating as an autonomous creative entity.
This transition could signal broader industry trends regarding production company independence and creative control preferences among veteran executives. The deal may influence how other producers under larger corporate umbrellas evaluate their own strategic positioning, potentially affecting employment opportunities and creative decision-making within the children's content sector. Audiences might benefit from increased creative autonomy at Cottonwood, though the Federation distribution partnership ensures continued market access for the company's content and future productions.
