Microsoft Activates Automatic Windows Settings Backup for Enterprise Devices

Microsoft has enabled Windows settings backup and restore as a default feature for enterprise systems running Windows 11 26H2 that are enrolled in Microsoft Entra. The tool, which previously required manual activation, now automatically preserves user settings and app configurations when devices are reset, replaced, or reimaged. IT administrators retain full control and can still disable the feature through Intune or Group Policy if needed.
Microsoft introduced this backup functionality at its November 2024 Ignite conference as an optional tool that organizations could choose to activate. The feature progressed through public preview in spring 2025 before reaching general availability the following August, allowing Microsoft to refine the system based on enterprise feedback. With the Windows 11 26H2 release in late September, the company shifted to enabling backup automatically for qualifying devices.
The automatic activation applies selectively: it excludes devices in European Union jurisdictions subject to the Digital Markets Act, those operating in sovereign cloud environments, and systems where administrators have already configured backup policies manually. Microsoft designed the rollout to respect existing configurations while establishing backup as a baseline for new deployments. Restore operations remain under administrator control, requiring explicit configuration before users can recover their settings.
The change affects enterprise IT departments managing device deployments and refresh cycles, potentially reducing data loss during equipment transitions. Organizations may experience fewer support requests from employees losing personalized settings during device resets or replacements. However, administrators must monitor the new default behavior and decide whether it aligns with their security and compliance requirements. Privacy-conscious organizations, particularly in regulated sectors, may need to actively disable the feature depending on their data governance policies.
