Broadcast Partnership Delivers NBA Games Free on Local TV and Streaming Service

A media company has partnered with a streaming service to air 15 Indianapolis basketball team games on local television stations and online at no cost to viewers. The arrangement begins in late October and marks part of a broader effort to distribute professional basketball content through traditional and digital platforms. Additional games will require a paid subscription to the streaming service.
Nexstar Media Group's broadcast division is expanding its station coverage beyond the initial Indianapolis outlets, planning to add local affiliates across Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Kentucky in coming weeks. This growth strategy reflects a broader industry shift, as DAZN has simultaneously constructed a local NBA network this offseason that now includes the Timberwolves, Cavaliers, Spurs, and Grizzlies alongside the Pacers, with select teams receiving over-the-air television distribution.
The partnership model addresses a significant gap in sports media distribution. Regional sports networks, which traditionally carried local NBA content, have largely ceased operations. By combining traditional broadcast television with streaming infrastructure, DAZN and Nexstar aim to restore accessibility to professional basketball in markets that previously relied on these defunct regional networks.
This distribution model could reshape how fans access local sports, potentially lowering barriers for viewers without cable subscriptions or streaming service budgets. However, the arrangement may also create fragmentation, as fans seeking comprehensive season coverage would need to purchase paid subscriptions for non-televised games. Local broadcasters and streaming services might benefit from increased audience engagement, while the sustainability of this hybrid approach depends on whether sufficient advertising or subscription revenue justifies the investment in multiple distribution channels.
