Apple's First Touchscreen MacBook Pro Expected This Fall With OLED Display

According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, Apple plans to introduce 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models featuring touch-enabled OLED displays sometime between October and November 2026. The devices are being tested with macOS 27.2 and will include existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips alongside a thinner design and Dynamic Island instead of a notch. The new models may be positioned as a premium tier above standard MacBook Pros, which are expected to receive M7 series chips in a later update.
Apple's touchscreen laptop initiative represents a significant departure from the company's traditional approach to MacBook design. The move comes as the tech industry continues exploring hybrid computing experiences, with touch interfaces becoming increasingly common on premium portable devices. Testing with an unreleased macOS version suggests Apple has been developing the necessary software infrastructure to support touch functionality across its laptop ecosystem.
The product positioning strategy indicates Apple may be creating distinct market tiers within its professional laptop lineup. By reserving touchscreen and OLED technology for a premium variant while reserving M7 chips for standard models next year, the company appears to be segmenting buyers based on display technology preferences and performance requirements rather than processing power alone.
This development could impact professionals and creative workers who might benefit from touch-based input for design, photo editing, and multimedia work. If priced at a premium tier, adoption may remain limited to higher-budget segments. The move may also influence competitive dynamics, potentially prompting other manufacturers to accelerate touchscreen laptop rollouts. However, questions remain about practical utility—whether touch interfaces on laptops genuinely enhance workflows or represent a feature-driven design choice that may appeal primarily to early adopters.
