Independent Distributor Neon Develops SCP Foundation Film with Creator Cooperation
Indie distributor Neon has announced plans to develop a film based on The SCP Foundation Wiki, a collaborative online project covering a vast collection of fictional paranormal entities and phenomena. Unlike rival A24's competing SCP adaptation, Neon took the courtesy of consulting with the SCP Foundation's organizers before proceeding, and the creators confirmed that Neon intends to comply with the project's Creative Commons licensing requirements. The SCP Wiki maintains that it will not grant official status to the film but expressed satisfaction with Neon's approach.
The SCP Foundation Wiki operates as a decentralized creative platform where hundreds of contributors have built an expansive fictional universe since 2008. The project's foundational Creative Commons licensing model means any derivative works, including films, must also be released under the same open-source terms—a requirement that distinguishes it from traditionally owned intellectual property. Neon's willingness to accept these constraints and communicate with the Wiki's administrative team contrasts sharply with A24's competing project, which proceeded without similar coordination.
Neon's approach could establish a precedent for how major studios engage with grassroots creative communities and open-source projects. The decision to honor licensing requirements rather than circumvent them may influence how other filmmakers approach fan-created or community-owned source material. This outcome could potentially strengthen the relationship between independent distributors and online creator networks, though the practical and financial implications of releasing expensive productions into the Creative Commons remain untested at scale.
