ESA Partners with OVHcloud and CGI to Build Earth Observation Data Platform

The European Space Agency has contracted OVHcloud and CGI to develop Digital EO, an Earth observation data system accessible to researchers, government agencies, enterprises, and the general public. The platform will aggregate satellite imagery and geospatial information to support scientific research and policy decisions. This partnership combines cloud infrastructure expertise with systems integration capabilities.
The European Space Agency has selected two technology partners to create a unified platform for Earth observation data. OVHcloud will provide the cloud computing infrastructure needed to store and process large volumes of satellite information, while CGI will handle the systems integration work required to make the data accessible across different user groups. This collaborative approach brings together specialized expertise in cloud services and enterprise technology solutions.
The Digital EO platform is designed to serve multiple constituencies with different data needs. Researchers can access satellite imagery for academic studies, government bodies can use geospatial information for policy development, commercial enterprises may leverage the data for business applications, and the general public can access information for educational or civic purposes. By consolidating these data sources in one location, the initiative aims to reduce barriers to accessing valuable Earth observation information.
The platform could democratize access to satellite data that was previously difficult or expensive to obtain. Researchers and small organizations might benefit from reduced costs and simpler workflows, while policymakers could make more informed environmental and infrastructure decisions. However, the initiative's actual impact will depend on user adoption rates, data quality, update frequency, and whether the platform proves intuitive enough for non-technical users. Success may also hinge on sustainable funding and ongoing technical maintenance.
