Ultra-Compact NVMe SSD Brings Expandable Storage to Handheld Gaming Devices

BiWin has released the CL 100 Mini, a miniaturized NVMe 4.0 solid-state drive measuring just 15 by 17 millimeters that can hold up to 2 terabytes of data. Designed for portable gaming systems like the OneXPlayer and GPD Win, the drive achieves read speeds of 3700 MB/s despite its diminutive size and inserts like an SD card without requiring system disassembly. The drive uses standard controller and storage components but comes in a custom form factor optimized for gaming handhelds.
The CL 100 Mini represents a shift in how manufacturers approach storage constraints on gaming handhelds. Rather than relying on microSD cards that compromise speed, or requiring users to disassemble devices to swap drives, BiWin has engineered a solution that slots in like a traditional memory card while delivering NVMe performance. The drive's controller and NAND components are commercially standard, suggesting that the innovation lies primarily in the compact form factor and integration with specific gaming console hardware.
Currently, adoption remains limited to BiWin's own gaming devices and the GPD Win5, as the proprietary 15x17mm slot isn't yet an industry standard. However, the concept demonstrates how niche markets can drive specialized hardware solutions when mainstream form factors don't adequately serve user needs.
This development could benefit the growing handheld gaming market by reducing storage-related friction for device owners. Users may gain faster load times and easier expansion without technical expertise or device modification. However, real impact depends on broader industry adoption—if the form factor remains exclusive to a few manufacturers, the addressable market stays relatively small. The pricing of the 2TB variant suggests potential barriers to mainstream accessibility, though competitive pressure from competing platforms might eventually encourage standardization around compact NVMe solutions.
