Inworld Acquires Seattle-Based Voice AI Startup Ultravox

Inworld has purchased Ultravox, a Seattle-founded artificial intelligence startup specializing in voice technology that previously operated under the name Fixie. The acquisition enables Inworld to incorporate Ultravox's capabilities for handling natural conversational elements like turn-taking and interruptions in real-time voice interactions. Ultravox had raised $17 million in seed funding in 2023 and was valued at approximately $51 million at that time.
Inworld, a Mountain View-based AI conversational platform company, has acquired the Seattle startup for capabilities in managing natural speech patterns. Ultravox was founded in 2022 by former engineers from major tech companies who focused on building voice models capable of handling realistic dialogue elements. The company had attracted prominent investors including venture firms Redpoint Ventures and Madrona Venture Group, along with individual investors from Google, Amazon, and Apple.
Several of Ultravox's original founders have since moved to other prominent AI organizations. Matt Welsh, the startup's first CEO, now leads AI systems work at Palantir Technologies, while co-founders Hessam Bagherinezhad and Justin Uberti both joined OpenAI in 2023 and 2024 respectively. The acquisition allows Inworld to integrate Ultravox's voice technology into its existing platform for enterprise customers.
This acquisition reflects consolidation in the AI voice technology sector as larger platforms integrate specialized capabilities. Users engaging with AI voice assistants may experience more natural conversations through improved handling of interruptions and turn-taking. The deal could accelerate development of voice AI applications across customer service, gaming, and enterprise sectors. However, the loss of an independent Seattle startup and departure of founders to competing AI companies illustrates how the AI talent market concentrates engineers and resources among major players and well-funded firms.
