RuneScape Franchise Expands With Fourth MMO and New Animated Series

RuneFest 2026 unveiled a fourth installment in the RuneScape MMO series currently in development using Unreal Engine, designed to introduce the franchise to new players while maintaining its signature depth and community focus. The event also announced an animated adaptation created in partnership with content creator MoistCr1tikal and Lyrical Media, following the model of fantasy game adaptations like Dragon's Dogma and Castlevania. The celebration marked twenty-five years of RuneScape with performances from the Manchester Video Game Orchestra.
RuneFest 2026 drew over 6,000 players to Birmingham to celebrate the franchise's quarter-century milestone. Beyond RuneScape 4, Jagex revealed substantial updates across its existing portfolio: Core RuneScape launches a remastered version in December with fresh progression systems, while Old School RuneScape has scheduled raids, new dungeons, and hardcore competitive modes. RuneScape: Dragonwilds will receive quarterly content additions including new skills and modding support through CurseForge.
The animated series represents a strategic move to expand the franchise beyond its core gaming audience, following the recent success of video game-to-screen adaptations. By partnering with MoistCr1tikal, a content creator with substantial online influence, Jagex may be positioning the show to reach both existing fans and viewers unfamiliar with the games, similar to how Dragon's Dogma and Castlevania reached broader audiences.
This expansion could reshape how legacy MMOs sustain themselves in competitive markets. A new entry designed for accessibility while maintaining complexity may help aging franchises attract younger players without alienating veterans. The animated adaptation signals how game publishers increasingly view screen media as essential for brand growth and cultural relevance. Such diversification could influence industry investment patterns, encouraging other long-running series to pursue similar multimedia strategies to remain culturally prominent.
