Sony Brings Advanced AI Upscaling Technology to Standard PlayStation 5 Consoles

Sony unveiled Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI upscaling technology for PlayStation 5 developed in partnership with AMD, bringing enhancements previously available only on the PS5 Pro to the standard console. The technology features a streamlined neural network designed to maximize PS5 performance while delivering improved pixel-level clarity and detail in games. Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei will be the first titles to implement QSSR technology.
Sony developed QSSR through its ongoing graphics partnership with AMD, known as Project Amethyst, which began in 2025. The technology represents a more efficient version of the PSSR system that debuted on the premium PS5 Pro console earlier this year. Rather than simply porting the Pro's capabilities, engineers created a specialized neural network architecture specifically optimized for the standard PS5's hardware constraints, allowing the base model to deliver comparable visual improvements without sacrificing performance.
The first implementations come from major PlayStation studios: Insomniac Games will incorporate QSSR into Marvel's Wolverine, enhancing detail across detailed urban environments, while Sucker Punch Productions is integrating it into Ghost of Yōtei to improve character and landscape fidelity. Both developers emphasize improved temporal stability—smoother image consistency across frames—as a key benefit previously unavailable on standard PS5 hardware.
This development could narrow the visual gap between standard and premium console tiers, potentially affecting consumer upgrade decisions and market perception of the PS5 Pro's value proposition. Players with base consoles may experience extended relevance for their hardware, while developers gain tools to push visual quality without requiring players to purchase more expensive equipment. The move may also influence how competing console manufacturers approach mid-generation technology releases and their distribution across product lineups.
