Israeli Military Conducts Precision Strike Against Senior Hamas Leader in Gaza
The Israeli Defense Forces and Shin Bet security agency carried out an overnight strike targeting Ali Ahmed Al-Amoudi, described as the most senior Hamas figure remaining in Gaza and a longtime deputy of deceased leader Yahya Sinwar. Al-Amoudi, a convicted murderer released in a 2011 prisoner exchange, was identified as being directly involved in Hamas terror operations and organizational reconstruction efforts. Israeli officials indicated the probability of his survival from the strike was minimal.
The targeted individual held a prominent position within Hamas's political leadership, having assumed formal control of the organization's Gaza operations in July following a leadership transition that began after the death of his predecessor in late 2024. His background included convictions for involvement in attacks dating to the 1990s, from which he was released through a prisoner exchange agreement over a decade ago.
Recent military operations have intensified against senior Hamas leadership, with multiple senior figures reportedly eliminated in strikes conducted over recent weeks. Intelligence gathering efforts, including information obtained from a captured Hamas official in early September, appear to have enabled these successive targeting operations.
The strike, if successful, could further weaken Hamas's organizational capacity in Gaza at a moment when the group is attempting to rebuild. The operation may influence broader regional dynamics by affecting the group's ability to function as both a military and political entity. Conversely, such targeted operations typically generate responses from armed factions and may affect civilian populations and prospects for diplomatic settlements in the territory.
