Multiple Programs Add Women's Flag Football Teams for 2026-27 Season
Several colleges announced new women's flag football programs for the upcoming season, including Dawson Community College adding a varsity team and Massasoit Community College launching a club team that will transition to varsity status. St. Lawrence University will begin a varsity program in 2027-28, reflecting growing expansion of the sport.
Dawson Community College and Massasoit Community College are launching squads for the upcoming academic year, with Massasoit initially fielding a club team before elevating it to varsity status. St. Lawrence University and Binghamton University have set their debuts for 2027-28, while the NJCAA's Alabama conference has finalized its fall competition calendar, running from late August through early November. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor is actively searching for opponents for late February 2027.
In coaching news, Binghamton appointed Jeff Melesky, who previously built Webber International's program and recently captured a national championship. Bryant & Stratton College earned academic recognition with a 3.62 team GPA, while several institutions, including Albright, Alverno, Arizona Christian, and Bethany, are currently advertising coaching vacancies.
The continued expansion of women's flag football could significantly broaden athletic opportunities for female students, particularly at community colleges and smaller universities where traditional football is absent. This growth may also influence institutional budgeting and recruiting strategies, as schools compete for a limited pool of athletes. Additionally, the sport's rising profile could enhance gender equity in college athletics, offering a new pathway for leadership and competition.
