Washington resident charged with aiding Canadian school shooting suspect

A 30-year-old Washington state man was arrested and charged with conspiracy to murder persons in a foreign country for allegedly assisting a teenager who killed eight people in a February school shooting in British Columbia. The suspect maintained online contact with the shooter through Discord, provided money and advice, and offered to livestream the attack while having knowledge of the plans but failing to alert authorities. The shooting, which claimed five students, a teacher, and two family members, was among Canada's deadliest.
The February shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia resulted in one of Canada's most deadly mass casualty incidents. The attacker, an 18-year-old who had been undergoing gender transition, first killed family members at home before proceeding to the secondary school where the majority of victims were concentrated. Beyond the eight fatalities, two additional children sustained serious gunshot wounds during the rampage.
The investigation revealed an extended online relationship between Bryant and the shooter spanning approximately three years, beginning on a video chat platform before migrating to Discord. Prosecutors highlighted that while Bryant reportedly discouraged the attack at various points and even discussed alerting authorities with the shooter, he ultimately chose to provide financial support and technical assistance rather than notify law enforcement about the planned violence.
This case raises significant questions about digital platform accountability and the responsibilities of individuals who become aware of violent threats online. The cross-border nature of the charges may influence how U.S. and Canadian authorities coordinate on transnational crime investigations. The prosecution could establish precedent regarding liability for foreign nationals who assist in attacks occurring outside their country, potentially affecting how online communities and law enforcement agencies prioritize tip reporting and information sharing across jurisdictions.
