Two Professional Sports Teams Host AI-Focused Hackathon to Address Content and Rights Challenges

Tottenham Hotspur and the San Antonio Spurs are co-hosting the Spurs² Hackathon on October 22-23 at the University of Texas at Austin in partnership with ScorePlay and TwelveLabs. Participants will develop solutions for an Assisted Auto-Production Engine that uses AI and live data to identify and create content from game assets, and a Rights and Compliance tool that verifies content against league and regional regulations. Student teams and visiting organizations will compete to solve real-world content management challenges faced by the two clubs.
The hackathon brings together two internationally recognized sports franchises to tackle operational inefficiencies in digital content management. By partnering with technology firms ScorePlay and TwelveLabs, the event leverages video intelligence and API infrastructure to enable rapid prototyping of solutions. The dual-challenge format reflects interconnected problems facing modern sports organizations: identifying valuable moments within vast archives of raw footage, then determining permissible distribution channels based on contractual and regulatory constraints. Winners will be evaluated by leadership from both clubs alongside representatives from the technology partners, suggesting potential pathways toward implementation.
The initiative could influence how sports enterprises approach content monetization and fan engagement strategies. As organizations accumulate unprecedented volumes of digital assets, automated systems for rights verification and content discovery may reduce operational costs and accelerate time-to-market for fan-facing media. Success in solving these challenges could establish templates adopted across professional leagues, potentially reshaping how teams balance content production velocity with compliance requirements. However, widespread AI adoption in rights management would require standardization of regulatory frameworks across jurisdictions and leagues.
