Jio Dominates Download Performance While Airtel Edges Ahead in Upload Speeds During Odisha Network Testing

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India conducted drive tests in Balasore during August 2026, measuring mobile network performance across four operators. Reliance Jio achieved significantly higher download speeds at 239.24 Mbps compared to Airtel's 67.10 Mbps, Vi's 24.65 Mbps, and BSNL's 8.18 Mbps, while also recording the lowest call-drop rate. Airtel marginally outperformed Jio in upload speeds at 16.61 Mbps versus 16.28 Mbps, with both operators demonstrating superior signal coverage in the region.
The August 2026 assessment by India's telecom regulator covered specific routes and defined hotspots in the Balasore district, employing systematic drive-test methodology over three days. The testing evaluated performance across four major operators using automatic network selection, meaning results reflect each carrier's actual technology deployment rather than isolated 5G measurements. Download speeds showed the most dramatic performance variance, with the leading operator delivering roughly 29 times the throughput of the lowest-ranked carrier.
Voice-call reliability metrics revealed another dimension of network quality beyond data speeds. Call-drop incidents, though relatively infrequent across all operators, ranged from less than 1 percent to over 3 percent—a meaningful difference for users relying on dependable voice connectivity in the region.
These findings may influence consumer choices and expectations in Odisha's telecom market, particularly for users prioritizing video streaming, file transfers, or consistent voice calls. Network disparities could affect business productivity, emergency communications, and digital service access across different user segments. The results may also inform regulatory assessments of service obligations and competitive dynamics, potentially shaping infrastructure investment priorities for underperforming operators seeking to narrow performance gaps.
