Alaska Airlines Looks to Portland and San Diego for Expansion

Alaska Airlines wants to expand by routing more connecting passengers through Portland and San Diego as Seattle-Tacoma Airport faces capacity limits. The carrier's chief commercial officer said using larger planes and Paine Field could also create growth opportunities. Seattle-Tacoma is expected to hit capacity by 2032, which may lead to restrictions and higher fares.

Alaska Airlines' chief commercial officer, Andrew Harrison, said the carrier can shift more transfer passengers through Portland, preserving Seattle-Tacoma seats for local travelers. He also pointed to larger aircraft, including 737 Max 10s and Max 7s, with cited seat counts of 188 and 124, plus Paine Field, as growth options.
