EBRD backs Bulgarian copper mine upgrade with €55m green loan
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has approved a loan of up to €55 million for Asarel Medet AD to modernize and cut emissions at its copper mine in Panagyurishte, Bulgaria. The loan will fund ongoing operations, exploration, and on-site renewable power generation. The EBRD says the project aims to improve efficiency, reduce power-related emissions, and strengthen corporate compliance, with about 68% of the financing classified as green.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has agreed to lend as much as €55 million to Asarel Medet AD. The money is intended for the company’s open-pit copper mine at Panagyurishte, covering continued operations, exploration work, and on-site renewable electricity generation.
The bank says roughly 68% of its financing counts as green. The project is meant to raise operating efficiency, cut emissions tied to electricity use, and improve corporate compliance. Copper is viewed as a critical material for electrification, renewable infrastructure, and e-mobility. EBRD has invested almost €5.2 billion in 324 Bulgarian projects.
The loan may affect mine employees and nearby communities by supporting continued operations and potentially reducing local power-related emissions. European manufacturers relying on copper could benefit from a steadier, lower-carbon supply. Governance changes may influence how environmental and social risks are managed. However, actual social and environmental outcomes would depend on implementation and oversight.
