OpenAI Introduces Persistent AI Agents for Workplace Tasks

OpenAI has unveiled Dots, always-on AI agents designed to work toward user-defined goals in the background. Powered by GPT-6 Astra, each Dot has its own cloud computer and browser and can connect with thousands of apps through OpenAI's plugin ecosystem. The company says the agents could assist with research, project coordination, content production, and software development.
OpenAI's Dots are persistent agents rather than prompt-bound assistants. Each runs on its own cloud machine with a browser, uses GPT-6 Astra, and links to over 4,000 applications via OpenAI's plugin system. They can pursue goals after a conversation ends, retain context, juggle several projects, and ask for guidance or report progress.
The agents are accessible through ChatGPT, Slack, and Microsoft Teams, carrying context across those channels. OpenAI suggests uses including research, project coordination, content creation, and software development, and says specialist Dots are in development.
The shift could affect knowledge workers whose jobs involve multi-step coordination, research, drafting, and software work. By handling background tasks across common workplace apps, Dots may reduce repetitive preparation and let employees focus on judgment and review. At the same time, broader use could raise questions about oversight, accountability, and how much workplace data agents can access. Organizations may need new norms for supervising always-on tools, while workers may see roles evolve rather than disappear.
