Mobile Data Use Outpaces Revenue Growth, Raising Monetization Questions for 5G

Jio, Airtel, and Airtel Africa are seeing mobile data use climb much faster than the revenue it generates. Airtel India's mobile traffic rose 36% year over year while mobile revenue increased 9.2%, and Airtel Africa posted 56.3% traffic growth against 27.2% data-revenue growth. The article explains that fixed-price and unlimited plans can let usage rise without raising bills, so operators must focus on service revenue, efficiency, and cash generation rather than traffic alone.
Airtel India's June-quarter mobile traffic climbed 36% to 31.1 billion GB, with monthly use per data customer at 34.4 GB. Mobile revenue rose 9.2% to ₹29,928.9 crore, ARPU stood at ₹264, and mobile EBITDA margin improved to 60.8%. Airtel Africa's traffic grew 56.3% while data revenue rose 27.2%.
Jio's Q1 FY27 traffic was 69.4 exabytes, up 26.9%, with 43.7 GB monthly per subscriber and 285 million 5G users. ARPU rose to ₹215.6. Jio Platforms' revenue grew 11.8%, EBITDA 15.1%, margin 53.3%. Ericsson data put global 5G subscriptions near 3.3 billion, with 5G handling roughly half of mobile data traffic and total mobile data up 23%.
Consumers could keep enjoying larger data allowances without immediate bill increases, but operators may seek higher-value plans or new services to improve returns. That may influence household budgets, digital inclusion, and network investment. Businesses and workers using video, cloud, and connected services could benefit from added capacity, while future pricing decisions may affect affordability.
