Minnesota GOP Senate candidate cites foiled mall plot in midterm security message

Republican Senate nominee Michele Tafoya said Minnesotans feel threatened after the FBI arrested an 18-year-old accused of planning an ISIS-inspired attack at the Mall of America. Authorities said the suspect had been under investigation for nearly two years and was arrested after buying a rifle and ammunition from an undercover FBI employee. Tafoya praised law enforcement and framed the November election as a choice between public safety and disorder.
Michele Tafoya, the GOP Senate nominee in Minnesota, linked the foiled Mall of America case to public safety concerns. Federal authorities said Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, 18, was investigated for almost two years and arrested after purchasing an AK-47-style rifle, magazines, and ammunition from an undercover FBI employee.
An FBI complaint alleged Mohamud pledged loyalty to ISIS and discussed attacking the mall on Oct. 24, when a Hmong arts event was scheduled. Tafoya praised the FBI and law enforcement, while Democratic rival Peggy Flanagan said she was relieved the attack was prevented.
This story may intensify voter attention to safety and terrorism in Minnesota's Senate race. Muslim, Somali, and Hmong communities could face heightened scrutiny or fear, while residents near the Mall of America may feel more anxious. Candidates' responses may shape perceptions of competence and security, though the plot's foiling could also reassure the public that law enforcement worked.
