Wolfspeed Gets Conditional $1.5B U.S. Backing for Silicon Carbide Manufacturing
Wolfspeed has obtained a conditional commitment letter from the U.S. Department of War’s Office of Strategic Capital for as much as $1.5 billion in long-term financing. The money is intended to back domestic silicon carbide materials and wide-bandgap power device production, including work tied to national security. Planned uses include improving gallium nitride epitaxy for communications and electronic warfare, plus radiation-hardening for current SiC and future GaN products.
Wolfspeed announced a conditional commitment from the U.S. Department of War's Office of Strategic Capital. The proposed loan would be senior secured and drawn over time, with a 30-year tenor. It could total up to $1.5 billion and support domestic silicon carbide materials, wide-bandgap power devices, and national security uses.
The company says the financing may help upgrade gallium nitride epitaxy for communications and electronic warfare, and develop radiation-hardening for current SiC and future GaN products. Wolfspeed would issue warrants for up to 7.5% of fully diluted equity, funded pro rata as tranches close. The deal remains subject to diligence, definitive agreements, approvals, and closing conditions.
This conditional backing may affect semiconductor workers, defense suppliers, and communities near Wolfspeed's U.S. sites, potentially supporting jobs and domestic production capacity. If finalized, it could strengthen supply resilience for power and radio-frequency chips used in communications, aerospace, and defense, though outcomes depend on due diligence and market demand. Taxpayers and investors may bear risk if milestones or financing terms change.
