Claude Arrives Inside Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides

Anthropic has added Claude to Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides through a Workspace Marketplace add-on in beta for paid Claude plans. The sidebar can read and edit the open file, while separate connectors let users create and update Workspace files from Claude. An “Ask before edits” setting is on by default, and the move puts Claude in more direct competition with Google’s Gemini.
Anthropic’s add-on places Claude in a side panel next to an open Google document, spreadsheet, or presentation. It is available in public beta for subscribers to Claude’s paid tiers, including Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. A separate connector setup lets Claude generate or revise Workspace files from within Claude itself.
The tool has boundaries. In Docs, Claude cannot manage existing comments or suggestions. In Sheets, it cannot use Connected Sheets tabs tied to BigQuery or create triggers, custom menus, or scheduled refreshes. In Slides, it can add slides, refine text, and restyle decks while preserving their design. An “Ask before edits” option is enabled by default.
This may give knowledge workers another AI assistant inside familiar Google tools, potentially reducing copy-paste and speeding drafting, data cleanup, and slide edits. Teams on paid Claude plans could gain flexibility, while Google Workspace users who rely on Gemini may see overlapping choices. Because Claude’s integration is add-on-based and limited, its societal effect may be gradual, mostly shaping workplace habits, oversight expectations, and competition among AI productivity providers.
