Aweh Mobile Launches in South Africa as Openreach Taps Ciena and Optimum Adds Rewards

Aweh Mobile entered South Africa's market with a family-focused mobile virtual network operator service aimed at simplifying household connectivity. Openreach selected Ciena's WaveLogic 6 and Waveserver platform to add 3.2 Tbps of optical capacity and enable 400G and 800G wholesale services across the United Kingdom. Optimum introduced the Optimum Thanks You program, offering customers prizes, event tickets, exclusive experiences, and savings.
Aweh Mobile’s new MVNO targets South African households, emphasizing shared family use and easier management of multiple connections. It joins a crowded market where providers seek distinct customer groups, and its consumer-first approach contrasts with network-infrastructure-led strategies.
Openreach’s Ciena deployment uses WaveLogic 6 and Waveserver to add 3.2 Tbps, carrying 400G and 800G services over 1.6 Tbps wavelengths. A 2RU chassis can host 32 400G services. The gear will sit within Openreach’s Optical Spectrum Extended Access portfolio, linking data centers, submarine landing stations and core sites, with Ciena managing deployment, monitoring and upkeep. Optimum’s Thanks You program offers prizes, event tickets, experiences and savings without points.
These moves could affect different groups unevenly. South African households may gain more choice and simpler shared plans, though benefits depend on pricing and coverage. UK businesses, data centres and network operators may see faster wholesale connectivity and capacity for cloud, media and submarine links. Optimum customers may receive added perks and savings, potentially strengthening loyalty. Wider social effects may include greater reliance on digital services and more pressure on providers to compete on value, experience and reliability rather than infrastructure alone.
