Protesters confront NYC Mayor Mamdani at Oct. 7 vigil, call him 'traitor'

More than 100 anti-Israel demonstrators marched from City Hall to Union Square and confronted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a vigil marking the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. The protesters accused Mamdani of genocide and selling out his constituents, chanting slogans as he stood with a candle. The vigil was organized as a mourning event for victims of the attacks and subsequent bloodshed.
More than 100 demonstrators moved from City Hall to Union Square, gathering beyond the barriers of a vigil organized by Israelis for Peace. They drummed and tried to overpower speakers while Mayor Zohran Mamdani stood nearby holding a candle. The event was meant to mourn those lost in the 2023 Hamas assault and the ensuing violence, including Israelis and Palestinians.
Protesters also pressed Mamdani on New York real-estate events promoting West Bank settlement properties and on the City University of New York’s Board of Trustees. One person said they had once interned for him. Mamdani has criticized Israel’s Gaza operations and condemned the Hamas attack.
The confrontation may intensify scrutiny of Mayor Mamdani’s balancing act between critics and supporters, potentially deepening distrust among some Jewish and Palestinian communities. It could also affect how local officials approach vigils, protests, and security around politically charged events. For residents and activists, the episode may reinforce existing divisions, while making compromise or dialogue harder in the near term.
