Novelists Kate Broad and Sara Maurer to Visit Ann Arbor Bookstore

Kate Broad and Sara Maurer will discuss and sign their novels at Schuler Books in Ann Arbor on Oct. 8 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The authors share an editor at St. Martin's Press and will present Broad's 'Greenwich' and Maurer's 'A Good Animal.' Both books are coming-of-age stories set in the 1990s, and the event is free with an RSVP.
Kate Broad and Sara Maurer share St. Martin’s Press editor Claire Cheek. Broad, from the Bronx, was Cheek’s first acquisition; Maurer, from Sault Ste. Marie, was her second. The two connected online, later met in New York City for lunch with Cheek, and have stayed friends.
Their Ann Arbor appearance is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 8, 6:30–8 p.m. at Schuler Books. Broad’s “Greenwich” costs $28; Maurer’s “A Good Animal” costs $29. Both novels follow seventeen-year-olds in the 1990s facing choices that reshape their futures. The free event requires an RSVP.
The event could draw local readers, booksellers, and aspiring writers to Ann Arbor’s literary scene. Attendees may gain insight into publishing friendships, editorial relationships, and writing about adolescence, memory, and privilege. Because both novels center pivotal teenage choices, the discussion might resonate with readers reflecting on how early decisions shape adult lives. Its impact is likely modest and community-focused, but it may help sustain in-person author events and bookstore programming.
