Sony Plans Crunchyroll Anime Hub for PS5 Home Screen

PlayStation's Hideaki Nishino announced at the Crunchyroll Anime Future Forum that PS5 will add a dedicated anime hub starting in Spring 2027. The feature is intended to help PlayStation users discover and explore anime content more easily, following Sony's 2021 purchase of Crunchyroll. Sony is also developing an anime series based on Ghost of Tsushima: Legends.
The PS5 already offers Crunchyroll through a standalone app, but Sony intends to elevate the service within the console's interface. The hub is scheduled to arrive in Spring 2027, with Hideaki Nishino presenting it at the first Crunchyroll Anime Future Forum. Sony bought Crunchyroll in 2021 for $1.1 billion.
Sony's broader anime strategy includes a Ghost of Tsushima: Legends series from PS Productions, expected next year. The company also owns Aniplex through Sony Music and has identified anime as a major growth area as it shifts further toward entertainment.
Placing Crunchyroll prominently on the PS5 home screen could make anime more visible to console users, especially those who already subscribe or casually watch. It may deepen ties between gaming and streaming audiences, potentially boosting Crunchyroll engagement and Sony's cross-media ecosystem. For fans, discovery could become simpler; for competitors, Sony's integrated promotion may sharpen competition in anime streaming. The change may also encourage more game-to-anime adaptations, though its actual cultural reach will depend on uptake and content quality.
