Developer launches free Rust-based Adobe alternatives built with Claude

A Reddit user released free, open-source replacements for several Adobe creative applications, including PhotoCraft, LightCraft, ImageCraft, and FilmCraft. The tools were written in Rust and built with assistance from Claude, with the creator targeting full parity in one month. The project has drawn warnings about safety, functionality, and possible piracy concerns.
A Reddit user, u/ai_art_is_art, announced in r/creativecloud a set of open-source Adobe substitutes, including PhotoCraft, LightCraft, ImageCraft, and FilmCraft. The original post was removed, though GitHub links remained. The creator says the tools are written in Rust and were developed with Claude, aiming for complete feature parity within a month.
Supporters characterize it as an independent rebuild without Adobe code, while critics cite piracy, safety, and functionality concerns. The software is also designed for AI agents to operate it, with controls exposed via JSON and an MCP server. A Sonar survey of 1,100 professionals found 96% do not fully trust AI-generated code.
If projects like this mature, creative professionals, students, and small studios could gain lower-cost alternatives and less dependence on subscription suites. However, unverified AI-generated code may introduce security, privacy, and file-handling risks if adoption outpaces review. Adobe's market dominance may face some pressure, though legal and quality concerns could limit practical impact. Open-source contributors and AI-assisted developers may feel encouraged, while enterprises may stay cautious until the software proves reliable.
