SLB Signs 15-Year Digital Well Planning Deal with TotalEnergies

SLB has secured a 15-year agreement to provide TotalEnergies with its DrillPlan well planning and engineering software. The deployment is intended to link subsurface data with well design and drilling workflows across TotalEnergies' upstream operations. The companies said the move supports a broader industry shift toward scalable digital platforms for well construction.
SLB, listed on NYSE, announced a 15-year arrangement with TotalEnergies covering its worldwide upstream operations. The companies will deploy SLB's DrillPlan software to create a standardized digital setting for well planning and engineering, linking subsurface information with drilling design.
The platform is meant to bring together offset well records, well paths, casing and completion details, and the assumptions behind plans so different teams can work from shared data. SLB's digital business president, Rakesh Jaggi, said operators want scalable tools that make planning more consistent across varied portfolios. The deal extends prior digital cooperation between the two firms.
The agreement may affect oil and gas engineers and drilling teams by shifting more planning work into shared digital systems, potentially improving consistency and reducing design errors. Suppliers and service firms could face pressure to adopt compatible tools. If well construction becomes more efficient, energy production costs and timelines may change, with possible downstream effects for consumers and communities near upstream projects, though actual social and environmental outcomes would depend on how the technology is used.
