Fortastra Secures $30M to Advance Orbital Defense Spacecraft
Fortastra, a California startup working on spacecraft for orbital defense, has closed a $30M Series A round. First In led the financing, with Upfront, Space Capital, Rsquared, Side Door Ventures, ATX Ventures, and others participating. The company plans to use the funds for a next-generation spacecraft that could launch as soon as the first quarter of 2028, following two demonstration missions since its 2025 founding.
Fortastra, based in California, has raised a $30 million Series A led by First In. Upfront, Space Capital, Rsquared, Side Door Ventures, ATX Ventures, and additional new and existing backers also joined. The startup, founded in 2025, has already flown two demonstration missions, including a satellite on SpaceX’s Transporter-18 this month.
The new funding will support a next-generation orbital-defense craft that may launch as early as Q1 2028. Fortastra intends to grow its engineering team and production capacity for expected Department of Defense orders. Its design includes sensors, propulsion, threat-response capabilities, and onboard autonomy, with a long-term aim of producing hundreds or thousands of spacecraft annually.
Fortastra’s funding may accelerate development of orbital-defense systems, potentially affecting military personnel who rely on satellite protection and commercial operators sharing congested orbits. Increased investment could normalize space as a defense market, influencing startups, investors, and government procurement. It may also raise questions about escalation, debris, and governance, though actual societal effects will depend on deployment, oversight, and international responses.
