Poll Shows Broad U.S. Concern Over AI's Pace and Impact on Workers

An AP-NORC poll found that 64% of Americans believe AI is advancing too quickly, while about 8 in 10 want the government to ensure it remains under human control. Many respondents also said protecting workers and minimizing environmental harm should be priorities, with bipartisan concern about job losses. Few Americans expressed confidence in either major party or President Trump to handle AI policy.
The AP-NORC survey found 64% of adults say AI is moving too quickly, while 27% call the pace about right and 8% too slow. Roughly eight in ten want government to keep AI under human control and to prioritize workforce protection. Majorities also rank environmental harm and economic growth as important.
Democrats and Republicans share concern about worker protection and human control, though priorities differ: Republicans emphasize economic growth and competing with China, while Democrats stress environmental harm. Adults under 30 report more worry than those 60 and older. Only about half call technological innovation highly important, and slightly fewer say that about China competition.
