Pinky Swear Revives Fringe-Winning Bluegrass Musical 'Bell Wringer'
Pinky Swear Productions will stage a new production of Bell Wringer, a bluegrass musical comedy that won Best Musical at Capital Fringe in 2023. Written by Seth Alcorn and Karen Lange, the show draws on the Appalachian legend of the Bell Witch and mixes spooky and silly elements. The cast features local DC actors and a bluegrass band.
Pinky Swear Productions previously staged another bluegrass musical, Over Her Dead Body, at Capital Fringe in 2016. That production earned audience honors for Best Musical and Best Overall Show, then toured Edinburgh in 2024. Bell Wringer, which won Best Musical at Capital Fringe in 2023, was written by Seth Alcorn and Karen Lange.
Lange encountered the Bell Witch legend through a Klecksography project with Rorschach Theatre. The story concerns a witch said to trouble the Bell family in eastern Tennessee from 1817 to 1821, especially John Bell and Betsy Bell. The new run is scheduled for October 22–31, 2026, in Arlington.
This revival may attract DC-area theatergoers, bluegrass fans, and supporters of local feminist theater. By mixing Appalachian folklore with comedy, it could give audiences seasonal entertainment while prompting thought about how rumors and belief circulate. For cast, musicians, and creatives, the run may offer work, visibility, and community connection, especially around the Halloween closing event.
