Ukrainska Pravda journalist Mykhailo Tkach held by Austrian authorities during reporting trip

Mykhailo Tkach, who leads Ukrainska Pravda's investigations unit, was detained in Vienna while on an editorial assignment with colleague Yaroslav Bondarenko. The outlet called the detention unlawful and asked for his immediate release, while Ukrainian diplomats sought access and an explanation from Austria. Tkach has reported on corruption within President Volodymyr Zelensky's circle and recently received a Free Media Award.
Tkach leads Ukrainska Pravda’s investigative unit and has documented graft and illicit finance linked to people close to Ukraine’s president. On Sept. 29 he was honored in Oslo with a Free Media Award for wartime reporting. He and Bondarenko were previously held in Poland in Feb. 2024 while examining cross-border goods flows involving Poland, Russia and Belarus.
Austrian police detained Tkach in Vienna during an editorial trip; Bondarenko’s location remains unclear. The outlet’s editor, Sevgil Musayeva, called the move unlawful and sought his release. Kyiv’s embassy asked Austria for an explanation, and a consul requested access. Tkach has reportedly spoken with a lawyer but not his newsroom.
The case may draw fresh attention to risks facing journalists who investigate corruption across borders. It could affect Ukrainska Pravda’s reporting capacity, at least temporarily, and may heighten concerns among Ukrainian media and press-freedom groups. Austrian authorities’ handling could shape perceptions of press protections in Europe. Ukrainian diplomats’ involvement may add diplomatic pressure, though outcomes remain uncertain.
