Kenya recorded its first imported death from Bundibugyo Ebola after a traveler arrived from the Democratic Republic of Congo via Uganda and died in a Nairobi isolation unit. Kenya’s imported Bundibugyo case involved a citizen who had been unwell for roughly a month and sought care at multiple DRC facilities before traveling. The route went by road from Beni to Kampala on Oct 2, then by air to Nairobi on Oct 3; isolation followed soon after arrival, and death occurred late on Oct 5. Kenyan officials identified 28 contacts, including relatives and health staff, and sought 23 passengers plus four crew from the flight. Since May, Kenya has screened over 652,000 travelers and tested 267 suspected samples.
The DRC’s cumulative toll through Oct 4 stood at 8,603 confirmed infections, 4,148 deaths, and 2,235 recoveries, a 48.2% case fatality rate. Some 896 patients remained in isolation, and 79.7% of known contacts were being followed.
