Israeli defense industry makes debut appearance at Moroccan airshow
Israel’s Defense Ministry sent a delegation and a national pavilion to the Marrakech Airshow for the first time, describing it as a milestone since Morocco joined the Abraham Accords. Eight Israeli companies took part in the biennial exhibition, which features more than 200 exhibitors from about two dozen countries. The ministry said the event supports Israel’s defense export strategy and cooperation with foreign governments.
Israel’s defense ministry described the Marrakech appearance as its first official presence at a Moroccan defense exhibition since normalization. The delegation was led by SIBAT, the ministry’s defense-export arm, whose chief called the pavilion a significant step. Eight Israeli firms joined the biennial show, which began in 2008 and draws over 200 exhibitors from roughly 24 nations.
Morocco joined the Abraham Accords in December 2020, after the UAE and Bahrain. Although official defense cooperation is rarely publicized, past reports have linked Morocco to Israeli air-defense systems, drones, and drone-industry partnerships; Israeli troops also took part in the 2023 African Lion exercise. Morocco spends more on defense than all but one other African state, exceeding $6 billion last year.
The debut could deepen Moroccan-Israeli defense ties, affecting military planners, local defense contractors, and citizens in both countries through procurement and training links. It may also draw scrutiny from groups opposed to normalization, while supporters may see economic and security benefits. Because such cooperation is often kept quiet, public debate could remain limited, with journalists and civil society possibly pressing for more transparency.
