Microsoft tests faster, redesigned Windows Search for Windows 11

Microsoft is testing a rebuilt Windows Search that it says is faster, more capable, and more modern. The new experience uses WinUI 3 and aims to improve performance and memory use while adding better typo and synonym matching. It also includes a refreshed interface with animations and inline previews.
Microsoft's rebuilt search is being trialed with Windows Insiders, with a broader Windows 11 rollout expected in the months ahead. The company says the WinUI 3 foundation has delivered notable gains in speed and memory use during early tests, while typo and synonym handling should make queries more forgiving.
The refreshed interface adds animations and inline previews for files, photos, and PowerPoint decks. It can also act as a launcher, toggling Bluetooth or dark mode, minimizing windows, arranging apps side by side, and—through Phone Link—sending texts. Microsoft plans to bring it to the Start menu next year and adapt it to different taskbar layouts.
A faster, more capable Windows Search could make everyday PC navigation less frustrating for millions of Windows 11 users, especially those who rely on keyboard-driven workflows. If search can launch actions and surface previews directly, it may reduce dependence on third-party launchers and other tools. Yet the benefits will depend on rollout pace, device compatibility, and whether the rebuilt experience remains reliable across varied setups. Users with older devices or accessibility needs may feel the change most acutely, positively or negatively.
