Apple Moves iOS 27 Update to Prominent Spot for iOS 26 Users

Apple has changed the Software Update screen so iOS 26 users now see iOS 27.0.1 as the main option, with iOS 26.7.1 moved to a smaller section. The company is not forcing the upgrade, but it recommends installing iOS 26.7.1 for security fixes. Apple has not released iOS 27 adoption figures.
Apple released iOS 27 on September 14, 2026. Until October 8, devices on iOS 26 saw iOS 26.7 or iOS 26.7.1 in the main spot, while iOS 27 and iOS 27.0.1 appeared lower. That arrangement has now flipped: iOS 27.0.1 occupies the main position, and iOS 26.7.1 is listed in a secondary area.
The change does not block iOS 26 users from staying put. Apple still advises installing iOS 26.7.1 for security fixes, and it has not published figures showing how many people have moved to iOS 27.
iPhone users still on iOS 26 may feel a stronger nudge toward iOS 27 because it now appears first in Settings. That could speed adoption, affecting app developers, IT administrators, and support teams who plan around current software versions. Users who delay upgrades for stability or device performance may face a tradeoff between newer features and security fixes. The real social impact remains uncertain, since Apple has not shared iOS 27 adoption data.
