T-Mobile leans on AI to direct network spending and boost service reliability

T-Mobile CTO John Saw described at Deutsche Telekom's AI Investor Day how the carrier uses AI to guide network investment. Its Customer-Driven Coverage system analyzes customer behavior across small geographic areas to prioritize builds and upgrades. T-Mobile also reported using automation for antenna adjustments during a winter storm and capacity changes during the World Cup.
EXPANDED:
At Deutsche Telekom’s AI Investor Day, T-Mobile CTO John Saw said Customer-Driven Coverage divides the U.S. into millions of 165-meter hexagons. It weighs dropped calls, voice and data quality, churn history, acquisition and retention trends, and competitive pressure. AI then identifies where a new site or upgrade could most improve customer experience, retention, and return on investment. Lake Tahoe, though sparsely populated, drew investment after the model detected visitors from San Francisco, Oakland, and Sacramento.
T-Mobile’s self-organizing network made over 30,000 antenna changes during winter storm Fern in January 2026 and cut site power use to add more than 250,000 backup-battery minutes. It reported 68% of customers reconnected within an hour and 98% within eight hours. During the World Cup, Dynamic CX handled more than 11,000 capacity adjustments across 12 cities.
