Google Launches Gemini Work Agent That Also Runs in Microsoft 365

Google Cloud introduced a Gemini agent for workplace tasks that can operate in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Calendar, Microsoft 365, and Slack. The agent is in private preview and can choose among Gemini and Anthropic models depending on the job. Google Cloud's June-quarter revenue and operating margin rose sharply, giving Alphabet room to push into rival productivity software.
Google Cloud unveiled its Gemini agent at the Gemini at Work 2026 event on October 8. The tool handles planning, business-system connections, content creation and coding, and is currently in private preview, with broader availability promised for certain Workspace Business and Enterprise tiers.
It selects models by workload — a lighter Gemini Flash for simpler jobs, a larger frontier model for longer ones — and can also use Anthropic's Claude. Google Cloud's June 2026 quarter revenue reached $24.77 billion, up 82%, with operating income more than tripling to $8.81 billion.
Workplace AI agents could reshape how employees divide routine tasks between themselves and software, affecting office workers, IT teams and software vendors alike. Because the Gemini agent reaches into Microsoft 365 and Slack, adoption may hinge on trust, data governance and cost rather than brand loyalty. If bundled access spreads, smaller productivity-software rivals could face pressure, while workers may gain time savings but also new oversight demands. The pricing terms Google eventually sets will likely shape who benefits most.
