Amazon Replaces Fire Tablets With Pricier Alexa Android Models

Amazon unveiled three Alexa-branded Android tablets, with the 12 Pro Nanomatte starting at $550, replacing its Fire lineup. The devices include Google Play and Alexa+, with shipping starting October 14 in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Amazon's subscription services have stayed near 7% of total revenue since 2021, so the first holiday quarter will test whether the higher-priced tablets drive engagement.
Amazon's new tablet family includes 8, 11, and 12 Pro models, with entry prices near $230, $330, and $500. The 12 Pro Nanomatte costs about $550, placing it above Apple's $449 entry iPad. All run Android with Google Play and Alexa+.
Orders began October 8, with shipments starting October 14 in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Amazon halted Fire tablet production but will keep supporting existing devices for four years after the last shipment, while remaining stock is still sold.
Amazon’s shift could affect budget-conscious tablet buyers, who may face fewer cheap Fire options and higher entry prices. Android and Google Play access may give users more app choice, while Alexa+ could tie daily routines more closely to Amazon’s services. Existing Fire owners may rely on continued support. The first holiday quarter may reveal whether these changes broaden engagement or mainly appeal to existing Prime subscribers.
