Microsoft 365 Family plans to share Copilot access, but storage becomes pooled

Microsoft will soon allow Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscribers to share Copilot and AI features with up to five other people on their plan. The company is also changing OneDrive storage from 1TB per person to a shared 2TB pool, starting after renewals following May 2, 2027. Subscribers will get a single AI usage allowance and can purchase more when needed.
Microsoft 365 Personal and Family gained AI Office features last year, but only the main subscriber could use them. Soon Family and Premium plans will extend Copilot and AI access to as many as five additional members, with controls for younger users. AI limits will merge into one allowance, and extra usage can be bought.
OneDrive changes are more contentious: accounts currently receive 1TB each, but the plan will move to a 2TB shared pool after the first renewal following May 2, 2027. Microsoft says eligible existing subscribers may receive temporary bonus storage, and it plans support for heavy-storage families. Premium costs $19.99 monthly.
Families and small groups on Microsoft 365 Family or Premium could see broader access to Copilot and AI tools, making advanced features easier to share. At the same time, households with large OneDrive needs may need to coordinate space or pay for extra storage once the shared 2TB pool begins. Younger users may gain access under parental controls, while heavy AI users could face added costs if their allowance runs out.
