Zcash sets January target for quantum-resistant payment signatures

Zcash developers are aiming to introduce post-quantum signature support by January, beginning with transparent transactions. The Zakura team plans hash-based signature opcodes that would reduce reliance on elliptic-curve cryptography. The effort gained urgency after Ethereum researcher Justin Drake's warning, which coincided with a roughly 11% drop in ZEC; no activation date has been set.
EXPANDED:
Zakura's proposed opcodes would use hash-based signatures, a method resting on different math from the elliptic-curve systems common across blockchains. The first rollout would target transparent payments, which resemble Bitcoin-style public transfers and represent about 70% of issued ZEC. No activation date is confirmed, so January remains a development goal. The effort gained urgency after Ethereum researcher Justin Drake warned about AI-accelerated threats to elliptic-curve cryptography; ZEC fell roughly 11%.
