Smile spacecraft captures first ultraviolet view of Earth's aurora

The Smile mission, a joint project of the European Space Agency and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has released its first ultraviolet footage of Earth's auroral oval. The video shows the northern lights ring rippling and brightening, a sign of a magnetospheric substorm. Smile aims to study how the solar wind interacts with Earth's magnetic field and can observe Earth for up to 45 hours at a time.
The Smile mission is a joint effort by the European Space Agency and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Its first ultraviolet aurora video, released September 30, 2026, shows the northern auroral oval rippling and brightening—a substorm signature. The footage spans 00:00–00:58 UTC on July 24, 2026, during commissioning. Smile is the first craft since 2008 to image the complete UV auroral ring, and it can watch Earth for up to 45 hours.
Its four instruments include a magnetometer, light ion analyzer, ultraviolet imager, and soft X-ray imager. The X-ray camera initially collected excess stray light, so teams are adjusting settings. They hope to image the magnetopause and northern polar cusp, aiming to better understand solar wind–magnetosphere interactions, solar storms, geomagnetic storms, and space weather.

... No markdown? Plain text. Good. Need check EXPANDED total under 120. We have 65+47=112. Good. Two short paragraphs. Under 120 total. Good. But "European Space Agency–Chinese Academy of Sciences mission" maybe okay. "first craft since 2008" source says first spacecraft since 2008 to capture complete auroral ring in UV. We say first craft since 2008 to image complete UV auroral ring. Good. "can observe Earth for up to 45 hours" source says can watch Earth for record 45 hours at a stretch. Good. Potential issue: "released September 30, 2026" source says released first aurora footage on September 30, 2026. Good. "during commissioning" source says while still being commissioned. Good. Need maybe "auroral oval" not "northern auroral oval"? Source: full ring of northern lights circling Earth's North Pole; auroral oval glowing around Earth's North Pole. Good. Need no copying source phrasing. We have "substorm signature" maybe source "That's the signature of a substorm". Original enough?
