Musk Accuses Indian Oligarchs of Blocking Starlink's India Launch

Elon Musk criticized unnamed Indian oligarchs on X, accusing them of blocking Starlink to protect monopolistic control. Starlink has spent more than six years trying to launch satellite broadband in India amid security-related regulatory delays. His remarks came as a Starlink business operations executive attended India Mobile Congress 2026.
Musk initially replied to an X post saying India needs Starlink because many village residents remain offline due to infrastructure gaps. He blamed unidentified oligarchs for preserving a monopolistic hold, calling this harmful to India's public. He then asked whether Ambani effectively controls India, citing Starlink's authorizations in more than 165 nations and five years of meeting Indian rules. The posts reportedly surpassed 100 million views.
At IMC 2026, Starlink business operations VP Lauren Dreyer was in India. Akash Ambani, chairman of Jio Platforms, declined comment on Musk's posts. Both Jio and Airtel have agreements to distribute Starlink kits once Indian services begin.
If Starlink's entry remains delayed, rural and remote Indian users may continue to face limited broadband options, while incumbent operators could retain stronger positions in connectivity markets. A faster launch could increase competition and choice, but may also raise regulatory, security, and pricing questions. The dispute's outcome could shape how satellite and terrestrial providers coexist, affecting consumers, internet providers, and policymakers.
