The score by Angelica Chéri and Ross Baum mixes country, gospel, R&B, and folk. Stevie Walker-Webb directs after a 2024 Paper Mill Playhouse run; he was Tony-nominated for Ain’t No Mo’. LaFontaine and Jaden make Broadway debuts; Ledisi plays Tallulah, Jaden plays Jesse.
The musical may resonate with audiences interested in overlooked histories, especially Black women and families navigating identity. Its blend of genres could draw country, gospel, R&B, and folk listeners who rarely share a Broadway stage. By centering sisterhood and self-truth, the show could spark conversations about belonging and visibility. Its Broadway platform may also boost visibility for its cast and creative team, including debuts, while inviting theatergoers to reflect on how the past shapes present ideas of freedom.
